Mental health is the most misunderstood topic nowadays. Most people regard mental health as ‘made-up’ mental condition. People only think of mental health as ‘Depression’ but Mental health has a much larger spectrum.

Mental health does consist of ‘Depression’ and ‘anxiety’ but saying it is only about these two things is foolishness. It has a much larger spectrum and consists of how we feel, how we think, and how we act.

What is Mental Health?

Mental health is emotional, social, and psychological health. It is how we think, how we feel, and how we behave.

 According to WHO, “mental health includes subjective well-being, perceived self-efficacy, autonomy, competence, inter-generational dependence, and self-actualization of one’s intellectual and emotional potential, among others”

It is a very stigmatized topic nowadays. Not many people are opening about it due to the fear of society and fear of being called upon.

 Many people fear to go to a therapist thinking of what society will society. People think ‘they will get over it’ and ‘they will be fine’ thinking their issue is not serious. 

But, like any other health, mental health is important and needs treatment, counseling, and medication like any other illness.  

So, here are 6 self-care tips and habits to improve your mental health and tips on how to be mentally healthy and happy.

1. Meditate:

Meditation has been around for several thousand years(5000-3500 BCE) and is believed to be originated in the Indian subcontinent. It is regarded as the most efficient way to reduce stress and cope with mental issues.

Meditation helps your mind to focus on the present. It trains your mind to focus on something and stops your mind’s chatter. 

By meditating, you will have ease in your anxiety and stress. Mindfulness meditation is preferred to comfort your depression. It also helps to increase peace-of-mind and mental wellbeing.

2. Eat good foods:

Omega-3 foods for mental health

The efficacy of fruits and vegetables on mental health is observed. Along with fruits and vegetables, foods like Walnut, whole grains, berries, fish, etc are listed as foods to improve mental health. 

Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids are considered as foods to promote mental wellbeing. This includes food like cold-water fishes like salmon, sardines, tuna, etc, and seeds like chia seeds, flaxseeds, etc.

Omega-3 fatty acids are considered to improve your brain function and development. It may also help to cope with several mental illnesses including anxiety, depression, etc.

You should always think of the best that could happen. Even in dark and bad situations, think of the bright side. For example, if something doesn’t happen as per you will, think that you have better in store for you. 

You should have a belief that everything happens for a reason. If something doesn’t work out for you, another thing might be waiting for you. In this way, you can always have a positive outlook on life and this is one habit to improve your mental health.

Many people are worried about their future and most people are stressed about it. This gives rise to mental illness such as anxiety and depression.

There are certain things that you can control and certain things that you can’t control in life. You have to do everything possible to make a good impact on the things you have control on. 

But, nowadays, most people are trying to control the things that are not on their control and this arises mental health issues. They are stressed and worry about the things that they can’t control.

So, learn to live in the present. Only care about the things that you can take control of and don’t stress or worry thinking about the future and things you cant take control of. This will keep you mentally healthy and happy.

5. Take a break:

Taking a break for your mental health is important. You may be too exhausted and too drained from your day to day job. This will make you stressed and you will not be able to think properly and it may arise any mental health issue.

Taking a break include having a digital detox and getting away from all the digital platforms. You can take this time to bond with your family better and get social with your friends.

Be more connected with nature and be away from the digital world. It will help you be away from all the toxicity in social media and news and will help you comfort your mental health. 

Also, you should never take upon too much of work. This makes you mentally tired and exhausted. You can develop this habit to improve mental health.

6. Engage in creative activity:

Creative Painting

Involving in some creative activities can improve your mental health. Drawing, painting, gardening, learning a new language, learning craft, and cooking comes under creative activities that can improve your mental health. 

‘An empty mind is the house of the devil’. Being engaged in some creative activity means your mind will remain occupied and no other thoughts can arise in your mind. You will focus on something else rather than having an empty mind.

You will also learn some skills that may be helpful for you in the future and you will be mentally happy and healthy.

  3. Lately I’ve been dealing with a lot more anxiety and it has been really helpful to follow some of these self care tips. Yoga, being in nature, and taking time for me has been so essential for making it through each day. Thanks for sharing!

  4. I love point 6. I love it because it is not often used in posts like this on self-wellbeing, growing a healthier mindset and view on life. Ihave read about meditation and healthy eating which I try to include in my daily routines. But being creative is one of the reasons a lot of us starts blogs. Having a creative out let is vital. It frees the mind, allows it to breathe. Awesome.
